Role (as Researcher : Health & Social Innovation of ARI-NBCC):

    • Develop inter-professional & interdisciplinary research capacity – within NBCC -&- with partner institutions/ researchers (Horizon Health, UNB, Dalhousie Medicine – NB, CCNB, NBHRF, Health-NB, etc.); represent NBCC at multi-institutional collaborations for research.
    • Expand research competence in the health-related programs of NBCC (Practical Nursing, Respiratory Therapy, Medical Laboratory Technology, & Pharmacy); coordinate research funding and fellowships (MITACS, CIHR, SSHRC, CIHR, NBHRF, etc.).
    • Engage NBCC faculty and students in health research (guidance for research plans, designs, managing and implementing projects; methodological & theoretical inputs; grant and ethics applications, etc.); evaluate research & funding proposal from NBCC faculty members & students.

NBCC Strategic Priority Initiative: Reducing Barriers (2018)

This research examines barriers faced by underrepresented groups (seniors, refugees/new Canadians, rural residents, and non-completers) in New Brunswick (NB), regarding joining and/or completing Post-Secondary Education (PSE) programs, particularly at NBCC. This study is a segment of NBCC’s ongoing strategic initiatives. This study’s objective is better inclusion of underrepresented groups in NBCC programs, in order to contribute to provincial growth of NB via a sustained increase of skilled workers.

Role & Contributions (as Consultant Researcher):

    • Review existing literature/environmental scan; examine data sources regarding barriers for PSE; evaluate secondary & tertiary data (government records, literature reviews, studies, reports, etc.) – vis-à-vis lack of participation in PSE, by the underrepresented groups in NB.
    • Analyse primary data (focus groups & interviews) gathered by NBCC, from – seniors, new Canadians, rural residents, and non-completers, in NB.
    • Examine NBCC policies, practices, program delivery mechanisms, and support services – directed at reducing barriers for the aforementioned underrepresented groups in NB; design action plans and strategies aimed at accommodating diverse needs of the aforementioned underrepresented groups.

Research findings inform NBCC’s Final Strategic Initiative (2017-2022) document.
